Room 5 Object Highlights
Eye Patch belonging to Captain Thomas Webb
Captain Thomas Webb was a British Army Officer who lost his right eye fighting against the French in Canada in 1759.
In 1765 Thomas Webb joined the Methodists in Bristol. His eye patch and his sword, which he carried into the pulpit made him very distinctive.
John Wesley remarked that, "The Captain is all life and fire: therefore, although he is not deep or regular, yet many who would not hear a better preacher flock together to hear him. And many are convinced under his preaching; some justified; a few built up in love."
In this room you will discover all about how Methodism spread internationally and about the stories of those who travelled great distances to preach the word of God.
