Have you ever wanted to have a go at sketching but don’t know where to start?
Come to John Wesley’s New Room for a creative afternoon in a wonderfully calm space with artist Simon Tozer, followed by an afternoon cream tea.
The afternoon begins with simple drawing exercises, progressing to sketching directly using the historic chapel at John Wesley’s New Room as the subject. The aim will be to equip students with some basic techniques that will enable confidence to take the pleasures of sketching further.
Simon has a special interest in drawing and sketching his surroundings. Over the last few years he has made many drawings of Bristol, close to his studio in the Old City. Drawing the life of Bristol has become a valued part of his practice, being an activity that briefly creates a quiet space of focus amid the noise and bustle of the city.
Workshops are taking place on:
Saturday November 12th
Saturday December 3rd
Each workshop runs from 2-4pm and includes:
- Welcome and initial sketching practice.
- Time spent sketching, with guidance and encouragement from Simon
- Afternoon cream tea including scones, clotted cream and jam with coffee/tea

About Simon Tozer:
Simon studied painting at Portsmouth and printmaking at Chelsea College of Art, where he won the British Institution Fund Award. He remained in London after leaving university and worked as a scenic painter and muralist. He moved to Bristol in 2002. He works as a printmaker, illustrator and teacher of screen printing.
Simon’s work has been included in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the National Open Art Competition and the RWA Autumn Open. His work is held in several public collections.
