A Service for Wesley Day

On Friday May 24th a Communion service to mark ‘Wesley Day’ will be held in the chapel at 1pm, led by Rev Ward Jones. This service is open to everyone and free to attend. This is a day which marks a significant event in John Wesley’s life which some people name as his ‘conversion experience.’

On May 24th 1738, John Wesley wrote in his journal that he went “very unwillingly” to a religious meeting in Aldersgate Street, London. During the meeting, at about a quarter before nine, he felt his heart “strangely warmed” and had a very powerful experience of knowing that he was loved by God, in the power of the Holy Spirit. His faith changed from being an experience of the mind to an experience of the heart and soul.

Wesley Day is also known as Aldersgate Day due to the place where Wesley’s experience took place. The closest Sunday is known as Aldersgate Sunday. It’s a good time to reflect on Wesley’s life and legacy but also an opportunity to think about how our lives are shaped and challenged by faith today.
