Health and Wellbeing Tour

Join this special one-off tour exploring the ways in which the New Room played a vital role in providing healthcare for those in the city centre. Discover the history of medicine and herbal remedies in the eighteenth century whilst you explore the rooms of the museum.

John Wesley always said that if you were very ill you ought to see a good doctor but he wanted those who could not afford doctors to be able to treat themselves. In 1747 he published his medical handbook, ‘Primitive Physick’ which offered: ‘Cheap, safe, and easy medicines, easy to be known, easy to be procured, and easy to be applied by plain and unlettered men.’ Primitive Physick sold over a million copies!

The tour starts from the atrium of the New Room at 2pm and last approximately 45 minutes.

Normal museum admission charges apply.

This tour is part of Healthier Bristol wellbeing days – visit the New Room on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th November to learn simple techniques and lifestyle changes that can help you to look after your own health in ways that can improve physical, mental and emotional health.
