The New Room is sharing a Friday reflection each week. We hope that these short reflections will act as a point of spiritual focus, enabling a moment of quiet thought and prayer.
This week’s Friday Reflection is from Revd Josette Crane. Josette is one of our chaplains at the New Room.
Ephesians 2 verse 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God.
As we are missing being physically present in the New Room at the moment due to a second lockdown in England, I would like to suggest you close your eyes for a moment and imagine you are visiting the New Room. As you wander into the entrance and hold the welcoming cafe in your mind, imagine the smells of the delicious baking all around you and feel the anticipation of food and warmth and company. This is like God’s welcoming grace, which is always present for us. Even though we cannot physically visit places, we can always feel that same sense of welcome and company open to us through our faith. This is a description of what has been called God’s prevenient grace, it is always there ready to welcome us.
Now continue on your journey through the cafe area and open the door to enter the chapel. Hear the rhythmic ticking from the clock. Feel the atmosphere of prayer and worship that has continued here for long years. Know the comfort of the presence of Jesus here that has led to the transformation of so many lives and continues today. Here is a sense of God’s justifying grace which brings us into relationship with our Creator through Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Return into the cafe and turn left to travel up the stairs, feeling the light coming in from the ceiling and exploring the life of the museum, the stories recorded in the library, the activity in the offices upstairs. God continues the transformation in our lives by sanctifying grace, the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit bringing more and more of the life and story of Jesus into our living.
The New Room continues its mission of bringing God’s grace to the lives of all who visit whether in person or in new online ways. We would really value your prayers as we work hard to explore and create opportunities of grace in these difficult times. You may like to use the prayer below to pray for the New Room.
We pray for all the staff of The New Room, give them wisdom in their thinking and success in their planning. We pray for all our volunteers, giving thanks for each person. We especially pray for any who feel sad or lonely at this time. We pray for the trustees of The New Room, may they have insight into what is most needed. We pray for the chapel and all the buildings that they may be protected, in order to continue to be an oasis in the city of Bristol. We pray for the presence of Jesus to be felt by all who visit, whether in person or online. Amen.
