History of The New Room

There follows extracts from the former official guidebook.

FRANCIS ASBURY ROOMS

Francis Asbury volunteered at the Conference here in 1771 for missionary service in America; he became a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and one of its most famous evangelists, "the St. Paul of American Methodism".

This room contains many items connected with America, including a picture of Asbury at prayer, a signed copy of the picture "Offer them Christ" by the modern American artist, Kenneth Wyatt, showing Coke, Whatcoat and Vasey sailing from Pill to America after the ordinations of 1784, and the No. 3 Cokesbury Bicentennial Bell, one of 1,984 such bells cast for the bicentennial of American Methodism.

Captain Webb was a Local Preacher both in England and in America, where he was largely responsible for founding John Street Chapel, New York City, and other Chapels in America. He was also the principal founder of Portland Chapel, Bristol, where he was originally buried. When that was closed, he was reburied in our Broadmead Forecourt. In this room note a letter from him, his eye-patch and the memorial window from Portland Chapel.
